How this is calculated

Money you can spend = take-home pay − bills − savings. Subtract what you've already spent, then divide by the days left, counting today. That's your daily pace.

If you spend less than the pace today, tomorrow's number goes up. If you spend more, it goes down. The month still ends on plan either way, which is why a daily number is easier to follow than a monthly one.

Worked example

Take-home pay of $3,200, bills of $1,450 and $300 saved leaves $1,450 to spend. With $640 already spent and 12 days left, you can spend $67.50 a day.

Questions

How do I work out how much I can spend per day?

Take your monthly take-home pay, subtract fixed bills and the amount you want to save, subtract what you've already spent, and divide by the days left in the month including today.

What counts as a bill?

Anything that leaves on a schedule: rent or mortgage, utilities, phone, insurance, loan payments and subscriptions. Groceries and fuel are usually spending, not bills.

What if the number is zero?

You've spent this month's spending money. Cut back on wants for a few days, or move money from savings on purpose rather than by accident.

Why use a daily budget instead of a monthly one?

A monthly budget only tells you you've overspent at the end of the month. A daily number tells you today, while you can still change it.
