How this is calculated

Tip = bill × tip %. Total = bill + tip. Each person pays the total divided by the number of people. With rounding on, each share goes up to the next whole number and the calculator shows how much extra that leaves.

Worked example

A $186.40 bill with a 15% tip is $214.36 in total. Split four ways, that's $53.59 each, or $54 each if you round up.

Questions

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. Tipping on the total before tax or after tax is up to you; local custom varies.

What's a normal tip?

In the US, 15% to 20% at a sit-down restaurant. In the UK, Australia and Singapore, 10% or a service charge already on the bill is common. In Canada, 15% to 18%.

What if people ordered very different amounts?

Split shared dishes evenly and add each person's own items on top. Savyit's split feature tracks who owes what between friends.
