An expense tracker that doesn't need your bank login
Yes, you can track spending without giving an app your bank login. There are three ways: type expenses in yourself, import your bank statements into a spreadsheet, or use an app that reads the payment alerts your bank already sends to your phone. The third is automatic, and your bank details never leave your phone.

The three ways to track without a bank connection
| Method | Effort | What the app sees | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual entry (app or notebook) | Every purchase, by hand | Only what you type | Cash-heavy spending, people who like the habit |
| Statement import (CSV into a spreadsheet) | Once a month | Your exported statement | A monthly review, long-term trends |
| Reading payment alerts on your phone | None after setup | The alerts your bank sends you | Seeing spending the same day, without sharing access |
Why people avoid bank-connected apps
Bank-sync apps connect through an aggregator or Open Banking. That's regulated and usually secure, but it means a third party can read your full transaction history, connections break and need re-approving, and smaller banks often aren't supported. If you'd rather nothing outside your phone ever sees your transactions, use one of the three methods above.
What to check before you pick an app
- Where is my data stored? On the phone, or on the company's servers?
- Do I need an account? An email sign-up means your data is tied to you somewhere.
- What permissions does it ask for? Notification or SMS access should be used for reading payment alerts only.
- Can I get my data out? Look for CSV export.
- Does it work with my bank? Check it understands your bank's alert wording.
Where Savyit fits
Savyit is the third method. It reads payment alerts on your phone, sorts each spend into a category and shows what you can still spend today. There's no bank login and no account, and the alert text is never uploaded.
| Where you bank | What Savyit reads | Turn this on |
|---|---|---|
| US, UK, Canada, Australia, Europe | Payment notifications from your banking and card apps | Push alerts for every card payment in your bank's app |
| UAE, Singapore | Payment notifications from your banking apps (for example Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB, Mashreq) | Transaction alerts in the app |
| India | Bank SMS and UPI alerts, plus bank-app notifications | Nothing extra: banks already send SMS for every debit |
What it can't do
- Android only. There's no iPhone version.
- It only sees what your bank tells you. If your bank app doesn't send an alert for a payment, Savyit can't see it. Turn on alerts for every transaction.
- Cash isn't in any alert. Add cash spends with quick entry or the home screen widget.
- It starts from today outside India. It reads new alerts as they arrive. In India it can also scan your recent bank SMS.

Can I track expenses without linking my bank account?
Yes. You can enter expenses by hand, import monthly statements into a spreadsheet, or use an app like Savyit that reads the payment alerts your bank already sends, so you never share your login.
Is it safe to give a budgeting app my bank login?
Regulated bank-sync services are generally secure, but a third party can then read your transaction history. If you don't want that, track from alerts or statements instead.
Which expense tracker keeps data on my phone?
Savyit reads and stores your transactions on your Android phone, with no account. Alert text isn't sent to Savyit's servers or to any AI service.
Does this work outside India?
Yes. Outside India, Savyit reads payment notifications from your banking apps. In India it reads bank SMS and UPI alerts as well.
