How to track spending automatically, without typing every expense

To track spending automatically you need a feed of your transactions, so you never type them in. There are two feeds: a bank connection, or the payment alerts your bank already sends your phone. Alerts are faster, since they arrive seconds after you pay, and you don't have to share bank access.

Set it up in three steps

  1. Turn on payment alerts in your banking app for every card payment and transfer. In India, bank SMS already does this.
  2. Let the tracker read them. On Android that's notification access (and SMS in India).
  3. Check the first week's categories. Fix any that are wrong, so your totals are right from the start.

The parts that trip people up

  • Transfers between your own accounts aren't spending. A good tracker pairs the money leaving one account with the money arriving in the other and leaves both out of your totals. Savyit does this.
  • Card payments. Paying off a credit card isn't new spending: the purchases already counted when you made them.
  • Refunds should reduce the category they came from.
  • Cash never sends an alert, so add it with quick entry.

Where Savyit fits

Savyit reads payment alerts on your Android phone, sorts each spend into a category, leaves out transfers between your own accounts, and keeps a daily "safe to spend today" number. It also lists subscriptions and card due dates. There's no bank login and no account.

What it can't do

  • Android only. There's no iPhone version.
  • It only sees what your bank tells you. If your bank app doesn't send an alert for a payment, Savyit can't see it. Turn on alerts for every transaction.
  • Cash isn't in any alert. Add cash spends with quick entry or the home screen widget.
  • It starts from today outside India. It reads new alerts as they arrive. In India it can also scan your recent bank SMS.

Questions

Is there an app that tracks expenses automatically?

Yes. Bank-sync apps pull transactions through a bank connection. Savyit does it from the payment alerts on your Android phone, with no bank login.

Can I track UPI payments automatically?

Yes. In India, Savyit reads bank SMS and UPI alerts, so Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm payments show up without typing.

Why does my tracker count transfers as spending?

Moving money between your own accounts looks like a payment in one alert and income in another. Savyit pairs the two and leaves them out of your spending totals.

Do I still need to enter cash?

Yes. Cash doesn't create an alert, so add it with quick entry or the widget.
