How much can I spend until payday?

Take what's in your account, subtract the bills that leave before payday and what you want to save, then divide by the days until you're paid. That's your safe daily spend. For example, £1,240 with £410 of direct debits, £100 to save and 12 days to go is about £60.83 a day.

The formula

(balance − bills before payday − savings) ÷ days until payday = safe to spend per day

  1. Balance: what's in your main account today.
  2. Bills before payday: rent, direct debits, card payments, subscriptions and EMIs due before you're paid.
  3. Savings: move it out first, so you don't spend it.
  4. Days until payday: count today.

Spend less than the number today and tomorrow's goes up. Overspend and it shrinks. Work it out every day, not once a month.

How payday works where you are

United Kingdom
Monthly payday. Count every direct debit and standing order that leaves before the 28th (or whenever you're paid).
United States
Paid every two weeks. Count rent or the card payment only if it's due before the next paycheck.
Australia
Paid fortnightly. Budget per fortnight, not per calendar month, so the numbers line up with your pay.
Canada
Paid biweekly or semi-monthly. Pre-authorized debits count as bills.
United Arab Emirates
Monthly salary. Put the rent cheque, DEWA and the phone bill in bills.
Singapore
Monthly salary after CPF. Include GIRO deductions in bills.
India
Monthly salary. Count EMIs, rent and SIPs that go out before salary day.

Why a daily number works better than a monthly budget

A monthly budget tells you on the 30th that you overspent. A daily number tells you this morning. It also takes care of small payments (coffee, rides, delivery) without you tracking each category.

Where Savyit fits

Savyit keeps this number for you. It reads your bank's payment alerts on your Android phone, takes each spend off today's number as it happens, and shows what's left on the home screen. No bank login.

What it can't do

  • Android only. There's no iPhone version.
  • It only sees what your bank tells you. If your bank app doesn't send an alert for a payment, Savyit can't see it. Turn on alerts for every transaction.
  • Cash isn't in any alert. Add cash spends with quick entry or the home screen widget.
  • It starts from today outside India. It reads new alerts as they arrive. In India it can also scan your recent bank SMS.

Questions

How do I work out how much I can spend each day?

Take your balance, subtract bills due before payday and your savings, then divide by the days until payday.

Should savings come out before or after?

Before. Move savings out on payday, then budget what's left.

I'm paid fortnightly or biweekly. Does this still work?

Yes. Use the days until your next pay, not the end of the month.

Is there an app that shows how much I can spend today?

Savyit shows a daily 'safe to spend today' number from your bank's payment alerts, on Android, without a bank login.
